Late last summer, I traveled up to Canada to visit a college friend in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We spent a few days in Halifax and then packed up our camping gear and drove up to Cape Breton Highlands National Park for a long weekend. It’s such a beautiful, quiet part of the world. Rugged coastlines, cool evenings, and gorgeous views. We camped a night at one of the reservable campgrounds, Cheticamp, and then did first-come first-serve at the Corney Brook Campground. We got there earlier in the morning to get spot for the holiday weekend.
We drove to Benji’s Lake on our way to Franey Mountain hoping to see a moose wandering about.
Franey Mountain is one of the hikes I really enjoyed. It’s steep and hard to get to the top, but the views are worth it.
The next morning, we drove into Cheticamp for our cup of coffee and food before deciding where we wanted to explore on our last day. The weather was supposed to be sunny and clear after the previous cloudy, rainy day.
After coffee and breakfast, we headed to check out a gypsum quarry which was beautiful! We were there early so we had it to ourselves. When we were leaving, several cars were already arriving.
Our final stop before the four hour drive to Halifax, was hiking the Skyline Trail at sunset. If you’ve done any research on Cape Breton Highlands, you have probably seen photos of this hike. It is so popular for a reason. Absolutely beautiful views especially at sunset. We were glad the sun was out for this one. Also we were finally able to see several moose! On our way back to the car, we saw two of them.
Nova Scotia is such a beautiful part of the world to visit. I loved my time in Halifax and Cape Breton.
